The Libyan civil war has been violated by several nation states that have intervened in the war for their conflict of interests each. In a recent event, a ship belonging to the United Arab Emirates was stopped by a European Union sea patrol on being suspected of breaching the Libya arms embargo.

The UAE Libya arms embargo breach reportedly took place when the ship in question, carrying jet fuel from the Gulf nation, was caught and stopped by the sea patrolling unit of the EU.

It was suspected by the Irini — EU military mission — that the ship which started its sail from the port of Sharjah, UAE, was heading towards Libya’s Benghazi city.

According to the statement by the EU sea patrol, the event was recorded as a UAE Libya arms embargo breach as the cargo of fuel was “likely to be used for military purposes”.

The EU security unit sent the Royal Diamond 7 ship to an undisclosed port owned by the EU for further investigations.

The severe scrutiny by EU patrol unit was shown towards the Royal Diamond 7 because it belonged to the Emirates, which supports the Libyan National Army, headed by warlord Khalifa Haftar. The army General has been accused of committing several counts of war crimes and human rights violations.

One of the most explosive violation committed by the UAE-backed LNA leader was uncovered with the mass graves, in which hundreds of victims laid dead, some of whom succumbed to torture.

In the past as well, the UAE Libya arms embargo breach has taken place multiple times, increasing the need of scrutiny over the Gulf nation and its involvement in the Libyan civil war.

In the recent breach, a German and supporting Italian frigate claimed stopping the Royal Diamond 7 merchant vessel right after the dawn in foreign waters, 95 miles north of Derna, a Libyan city.

The UN Security Council-led arms embargo was imposed to stop military confrontation and facilitate peace process in Libya. Irini is the operation dedicated by the European Union to ensure the enforcement of the embargo.
